Stroll Around The Groove

STROLL AROUND THE GROOVE on CJLO (Lire en français plus bas)

CJLO : 1690 AM

Since we’ve been working hard lately on the Unlog Complex #1 beat tape project, this Unlog Cave section may have been a bit left out. Now is the time to revive it for all you crate diggers, introducing to you this Montreal based radio program dedicated to rare groove music. (the program is in french, but the vibe remains intact).

Between funk, jazz-funk, blues, soul, hip hop, bossa, early disco, reggae, scratch music and even more, Stroll Around The Groove deeply explores the magnificent world of groove music,  with selection tastes that will content the vibe seekers as well as the most demanding ears.

Here’s the team’s latest podcast (currently listening to an exclusive scratch routine by Fong Fong aka J-One), followed by the basic yet useful links that you’ll need to keep the vibe every week.

Light it, tune in, enjoy.

Bien, maintenant on reprend.

Those Shocking Shaking Days : Indonesian Hard, Psychedelic, Progressive Rock and Funk : 1970-1978

The Unlog cave opens.

You already have sooo many reasons to follow our team on this blog, from newest wonky releases and free downloads, podcasts, forthcoming DnB bangers, etc…

So why would we, again, open a new category on this blog?

Are we facing an ageing crisis, in this music scene in which faster=newer = better? Are we becoming already dayum old bastards turning into an "Old school forever, fuck CD" mode?

Which leads us to the question : for fuck’s sake, who the fuck are you? Who cares? Where’s my bass massage?

1) Honestly, I don’t understand why you are asking such gross questions. I mean, seriously, we’ve been knowing each other for a long time now, right? If not, you might be new here, so it’s time to update and refresh your ears with our Podcast section.

2) The REAL reason  : This new category is a pretext, an open field to "non-new" music experiments. We want to dedicate a new space to sharing some different and inspirational gems to all of you music enthusiastic, and here’s a first one to illustrate my words.

FROM NOW-AGAIN RECORDS: INDONESIAN HARD, PSYCHEDELIC, PROGRESSIVE ROCK AND FUNK 1970-1978

Released on Now Again Records in early 2011 (say what? Exclusive vinyl package on Stones throw?), this anthology gathers a selection of Indonesian psychedelic funk  and progressive rock major tracks originally released between 1970 and 1978, during Suharto’s long lasting dictatorship. Wasn’t Obama in high school in Indonesia in this period? hmmm… interesting…

Ivo’s Group- That Shocking Shaking Day

From

"The progressive music scenes in 1970s Indonesia were largely underground as a result of strict censorship imposed by the dictator Suharto. Those who performed music marked by relentless fuzz, over the top, politically charged lyrics, strong rhythms and a cranky low-fidelity were truly rebellious. And the resulting output has been largely outside of the confines of this island nation unheard or ignored. Indonesia, based in large part on the restrictions imposed by Suharto, is better known for the coffee it exports than the music it creates. This situation hasn’t been remedied by the rough-hewn Indonesian bootlegs that dotted the psychedelic landscape over the past five years. Thanks now to the tireless and expensive research of Canadian hip hop producer and Southeast Asian music specialist Jason Moss Connoy – and the trust that Indonesian rock legend Benny Soebardja placed in Now-Again Records as he traversed his homeland’s islands securing the rights necessary for us to offer you this anthology – we feel like we can, in good spirits and conscience, shine the light on some of the most impressive organizations to offer their take on the psychedelic and progressive rock and funk sounds during the early shocking, shaking days of Suharto’s regime."
